India’s wilderness through a birders eyes

India is one of the 12 mega-diverse countries of the world with 7-8% of the worlds recorded species over 90,000 animal species and 45.500 plant species.

12.6% of mammals, 4.5% of birds, 45.8% of reptiles, 55.8% of amphibians, and 33% of Indian plants are endemic to india that are not found anywhere else in the world.

India boasts remarkable biogeographic diversity, ranging from the Himalayas in the north—divided into the Western and Eastern Himalayas—to the high rate of endemism in the Western Ghats, primarily in South India. It includes the semi-desert and desert ecosystems of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan and the Kutch district of Gujarat, as well as the trans-Himalayan region of Ladakh, which supports unique species of birds and mammals. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are notable for their exceptionally high endemism. Additionally, the plains of central and northern India, various wetlands scattered across the country, and a long coastline that supports a wide variety of aquatic and pelagic birds contribute to this rich diversity.

According to current estimates, India is home to more than 1,375 species of birds, with new species being recorded every year as birdwatching and bird photography gain popularity.

With strict wildlife laws, caging, poaching of birds and mammals is illegal in India and that can be witnesses out in the field as its much easier to see birds in the wild than some of the south east Asian countries.
